Bike and Leisure Paths

Bike/E-Bike Etiquette and Safety

Hilton Head Island is made for exploring on two wheels. With more than 60 miles of public pathways and trails, plus beach cruising opportunities, it’s easy to enjoy the island’s natural beauty at your own pace. These well-maintained leisure paths connect neighborhoods, parks, beaches, and attractions—making biking one of the most popular (and fun!) ways to get around. From sunrise rides to post-dinner pedal sessions, Hilton Head’s bike-friendly layout offers something for every age and skill level.

Pathway safety is important! All pathway users should adhere to the guidelines below:
  • KNOW THE LAW- In South Carolina, motorists have the right of way at all crosswalks, intersections and curb cut entrances. On pathways, pedestrians have the right of way.
  • Keep right, pass left
  • Announce to pass: Use your bell or voice ("passing on your left") when passing others
  • Observe a safe and courteous speed on pathways
  • If you stop pull off the path
  • At intersections, stop, look, listen. Make eye contact with turning traffic.
  • Wear a helmet
  • Respect all pathways users.
  • Lights and reflectors should be used when biking at night- colored clothing is recommended

Have fun, stay alert and happy trails!
