What is the Lantern Parade on Hilton Head Island?

The Lantern Parade is an annual event that takes place in mid to late November. During the event, participants march along the parade route, which covers several of Hilton Head’s finest beaches, with decorated lanterns lighting up the sky. This event was started in 2019 by Chantelle Rytter to celebrate the community and express artistic creativity. Since its inception, the Lantern Parade has grown to new heights, with more lanterns and spectators getting in on the action.

When Does the Parade Start?

The Lantern Parade begins at 5:45 p.m. at Alder Lane Beach Access, where it continues up to South Forest Beach, Coligny Beach Park, before wrapping up at Lowcountry Celebration Park. However, Lantern Parade festivities begin at 3 p.m., where you can make lanterns, enjoy face painting, and bop along to live music at Loggerhead Landing. At 4 p.m., food trucks and beverages will be available at Lowcountry Celebration Park.

Can I Participate in the Lantern Parade?

Whether you’re a Hilton Head native or from out of town, you can participate in the Lantern Parade. The only thing you need to participate in the Lantern Parade is a lantern. Don’t bring a sky lantern, also known as a Chinese lantern, as these items are banned in South Carolina due to safety and environmental concerns. Instead, craft or decorate a handheld lantern. Don’t be afraid to let your creativity shine; the wide variety of lantern colors, shapes, and sizes help make this event so special. Lineup for the parade begins at 5 p.m. at Alder Lane Beach Access. If you’ve brought your pet along on your vacation to Hilton Head Island, leave them at home for the Lantern Parade. Pets are not allowed for the safety of them and everyone in attendance.
